Here’s what we do:
• Check every pet for ID, tattoo or microchip and make every reasonable effort to contact the registered owner
• When approrpriate, advertise all found pets on our website and social media channels to reach as many people as possible
• Submit PawsBoosts and research lost and missing pet reports with local authorities
Stray Holding Period and Reclaiming Your Lost Pet:
• All cats and dogs are held for three full days as strays before being evaluated for our adoption program
• After this period, if an owner has not come forward, the animal will officially become an adoptable Furvivor, pending all necessary health evaluations and our intake and evaluation protocols
• If an owner comes forward shortly after the three-day stray holding period (e.g., within a day or two), we will do our best to reunite the pet with their family, assuming all necessary documentation is provided promptly
• Any costs incurred by Furvivors during the pet’s stay—including boarding, veterinary care, and basic needs—will need to be reimbursed by the owner before reclaiming the pet, regardless of whether the pet is reclaimed during or after the stray holding period
• All owners seeking to reclaim pets either during or after the stray holding period will be required to provide a detailed description of the pet along with clear photographs or video of the animal in question. Government-issued photo identification and valid proof of ownership are also required. This proof of ownership may include: veterinary or vaccination records with the owner’s name; an adoption contract from a previous shelter or rescue; a bill of sale from a breeder and ownership transfer documents; a city-issued license linked to the pet; or a microchip certification matching the address on the owner’s state-issued ID. Pet owners residing under a tenant agreement or lease contract must provide proof of animal occupancy via the leasing agent or landowner.
• Furvivors reserves the right to require additional information and proof of ownership, with the best interest of the animal’s well-being in mind.
Note: while we encourage public involvement in helping spread the word about found pets, access to the animals in our care is managed by Furvivors staff to protect the health and safety of the animals.
